AMSTERDAM MC Interview: Yazi

Who are you and where are you from?

I am Yazmani Morhée, born and raised in Amsterdam Oud-West.

When did you start making music?

When I was twelve, I was already in a band in which I performed a number of times. This band fell apart when I was around the age of seventeen, because we got older and our lives became busier. Then I started writing lyrics myself, because loads of artists were inspiring me. From my twentieth I started releasing songs. Now, two years later, everything is going in the right direction.

What is the inspiration behind the name ‘Yazi’?

Many people have trouble pronouncing my name, so I got the idea to shorten this. That’s how I came up with the name Yazi. This sounds a bit more relaxed and now I will go through life as Yazi.

How would you describe your style of music?

I wouldn’t put myself in a box because I like to vary in each song. I mainly make melodic trap, which sometimes turns to a combination of drill and punk rock. It’s important to try out new styles like reggaeton or afrotrap. By taking inspiration from other genres, you can learn a lot as an artist, and apply these styles to your own sound. This makes an artist unique.

What kind of impact did the Dutch music-scene had on your style?

My professional career started with an invitation from FunX after I released a single. This was a new experience, because I threw myself in the deep. The advantage of this is that I learned a lot from the other artists there and from the jury present. Hard work is rewarded and that is something I now apply in my daily life.

Your most streamd song on Spotify is “Noncha” featuring Botje. How did this single came alive?

Botje and I understand each other very well, we have great chemistry. We know what to expect from each other, and the same goes for our producer Job (JobbinMadeIt). “Noncha” is a song that came about like with almost every song we made as a trio, in the attic. During a game of FIFA, Job was producing new beats. When Botje and I heard this beat, we quickly came to a melody for the chorus, after which everything went into high gear. We are a dream trio, because our collaboration keeps running out. This can not only be heard in the song, but can also be seen in the video clip.

What do you want to achieve in 2021?

My first goal is to make a name in Spain, but also to grow in the Netherlands. At the moment I am busy releasing songs in both languages and organizing collabs with various international artists, such as A Tourist, Jimbo, Samira Harding, Raiz Rose, just to name a few. In my opinion, this is the best way to expand your audience and develop yourself. Another goal I have in mind is shows. The question is whether that will still work this year

With which national and international artists do you want to collab?

I am really looking up to Ronnie Flex, his sound and drive to continuously be at the top of the Dutch music game is wonderful to see. And in Spain I would like to work with Moonkey
